Netflix Series Reignites ‘The Witcher 3’ Interest on Steam

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt made its global debut more than four years ago, but CD Projekt’s game is still going strong and is now more popular on Steam than it was at launch.

In a tweet, CD Projekt employee Marcin Momot revealed that, on Dec. 29, nearly 94,000 people signed into Steam and played The Witcher 3. Previously, the record had been 92,268 players in May 2015 when it launched.

It didn’t occur miraculously. Netflix released a series based on the book series, and it appears to have lifted CD Projekt’s game as well. Starring actor Henry Cavill, the eight-episode first season attracted almost as many viewers as Netflix’s Stranger Things and The Mandalorian on Disney+. The Witcher is one of the most-watched Netflix series of the year, earning itself a second season due out in 2021.

Steam still labels The Witcher 3 in its top 10 games by current player count. Players might’ve finished the Netflix series, but they’re still very much interested in the game.

Some video games continue selling well and host strong player bases several years after being released, but it’s not very common. The Witcher 3, however, doesn’t just have the Netflix series on its side. Steam is selling the game for just $15 right now. So there’s no better reason to purchase The Witcher 3. It’ll serve as additional entertainment if you’re enjoying the Netflix series, and you’ll get to explore a vast gameworld as Geralt of Rivia himself.
