It is well known that Google is working hard on the next major Android platform. It is referred to as Android N and its preview was out in March this year. However, Google did not reveal what features it will bring to the table as soon as it is released.
At the Google I/O keynote session, Google revealed some of the highlights of the Android N platform. It brings performance, security and productivity-oriented features that are detailed below.
Android N is faster
When it comes to performance, Android N comes with the support for Vulcan. This new API would let game developers create games that are better-looking without compromising on performance. This is possible by providing them with direct control over the device’s GPU.
Vulcan is a 3D graphics and computing API that has low overhead and it is available on several platforms. It lets adding advanced visuals such as real-time reflections and water effects, realistic motion blur and a few more to games without bogging the hardware of the device.
Apart from gaming, the Android N compiler shows performance improvement between 30 and 600 percent on key CPU benchmarks in comparison to Marshmallow. The app installs are faster by 75 percent and the same uses just 50 percent space.
Android N is more secure
Timely software updates play an important role in security. The updates will be automatically downloaded to the device and they will be applied once it is turned on. Moreover, updates are done seamlessly any lengthy installation procedures.
Android N keeps the users’ data secure with file-based encryption. It is done to provide better protection to all the users of the system. The codecs and file extractors have been split into separate protected processes to ensure better security of the device as a whole.
More multi-tasking features are included
Android N has a better recent apps screen and there are more multitasking features. The Clear All button is placed at the top conveniently and the Quick Switch is the coolest addition. Once a double tap is made on the recent apps button, it will bring the last app that you were in.
The new version has split screen mode for phones and tablets. The enhanced notifications UI is a new addition. It provides an option to send quick replies to the incoming messages without opening the specific app.
A long press on any notification will enable blocking the notification or make the same silent. And, notifications from one app will be grouped together.
Android N has improved Doze
These days, the major concern with smartphones is that they don’t last for long between charges. Android Marshmallow came up with Doze to make things better. This feature optimized stand-by efficiency by lever management of the background activities.
The Android N has improved the Doze. The battery saving feature will start soon after the screen is turned off. As before, the device need not stand still for the feature to kick in. It will effectively minimize battery power consumption by minimizing background activity aggressively.
Android N is now in Beta
The Android N version is now in the beta phase. It will be going official this fall. We can expect its preview to be made available shortly. Moreover, there are more than 70 emojis that were added.
